UWP stands for Universal Windows Platform, a software abbreviation.
Microsoft app platform introduced with Windows 10 in 2015 for building apps that run across PCs, Xbox, HoloLens and the now-discontinued Windows phones from one code base, distributed through the Microsoft Store.
Example: The calculator in Windows 10 is a UWP app, sandboxed and updated through the Store.
Usage notes
UWP apps run in a sandbox with declared capabilities, which improves security but limited what developers could build. Adoption stayed modest, and Microsoft shifted its focus to the Windows App SDK (WinUI 3) and to accepting traditional Win32 apps in the Store. UWP remains supported but receives few new features.
