AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project, a software abbreviation.
Open-source code base of the Android operating system, maintained by Google and released mainly under the Apache 2.0 license. Phone makers and custom-ROM projects build their own versions of Android from it.
Example: Amazon's Fire OS is built on AOSP without Google's apps or the Play Store.
Usage notes
AOSP lacks Google Mobile Services, so devices built only on it have no Play Store, Gmail or Google Maps unless those are licensed separately. In 2025 Google moved Android development to internal branches, publishing source code in periodic releases rather than continuously. GrapheneOS and LineageOS are well-known AOSP-based systems.
