1. OpenDocument Presentation
Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations
Slide-presentation file in the OpenDocument Format, the default for LibreOffice Impress and also supported by PowerPoint and Google Slides.
Example: The conference accepts slides as PPTX, ODP or PDF.
ODP is the open counterpart of PPTX. Animations, transitions and embedded media sometimes behave differently when an ODP is opened in PowerPoint, so presenters often bring a PDF backup. Templates use the .otp extension. Like other OpenDocument files, an ODP is a ZIP archive that can be unpacked to inspect its contents.
2. Overdraft protection
Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations
Optional bank service that covers transactions when a checking account lacks sufficient funds, either by transferring money from a linked savings account, credit card or credit line or by having the bank pay the item for a fee. It prevents declined payments and returned checks.
Example: Linking her savings account as ODP means a $10 transfer fee instead of a $35 overdraft charge.
US banks must obtain customers' opt-in consent before charging overdraft fees on ATM withdrawals and one-time debit card purchases, under Regulation E rules effective in 2010. Transfer-based protection is usually cheaper than standard overdraft coverage. The abbreviation appears mainly in account disclosures and statements.
3. Obviousness-type double patenting
Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations
Court-made doctrine that bars a patent owner from obtaining claims in a second patent that are not patentably distinct from claims in its earlier patent, preventing extension of the exclusive right beyond the first patent's term. It is usually overcome by filing a terminal disclaimer.
Example: The examiner issued an ODP rejection over claims of the applicant's own earlier patent.
Also called nonstatutory double patenting. It differs from statutory double patenting under 35 U.S.C. § 101, which bars claiming the identical invention twice and cannot be cured by a disclaimer. It matters most for large continuation families, especially in pharmaceuticals.
