MOBI stands for Mobipocket e-book, a file format abbreviation.
E-book format from the French company Mobipocket, used by early Amazon Kindle devices after Amazon bought Mobipocket in 2005. It has been largely phased out in favor of newer Kindle formats and EPUB.
Example: My old MOBI files still open on the Kindle, but Send to Kindle no longer accepts them.
Usage notes
Mobipocket released the format around 2000 for PDAs. Amazon's AZW format was essentially MOBI with DRM, and the later KF8 (AZW3) and KFX formats replaced it. In 2022 Amazon stopped accepting MOBI files through Send to Kindle and began accepting EPUB instead. Calibre remains a popular tool for converting MOBI books.
