AZW3 stands for Kindle Format 8, a file format abbreviation.
Amazon Kindle e-book format introduced in 2011 with the Kindle Fire, supporting HTML5 and CSS3 for richer layouts than the older MOBI-based AZW format. Books bought from Amazon may carry DRM that ties them to the buyer's account.
Example: Calibre converted the EPUB to AZW3 so it keeps its formatting on my old Kindle.
Usage notes
AZW3 is also called KF8; Amazon later introduced the KFX format with improved typography, and Kindle Store purchases now usually download in KFX. Amazon's own tools favor EPUB as the upload format for authors through Kindle Direct Publishing. The letters themselves are not an official expansion.
