EPUB stands for Electronic Publication, a file format abbreviation.
Open e-book standard whose text reflows to fit any screen size, supported by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most e-readers except older Kindles. An EPUB is a ZIP package of XHTML, CSS, images and metadata.
Example: The library lends e-books as EPUB files that open in the Libby app or on a Kobo.
Usage notes
The International Digital Publishing Forum released EPUB in 2007, and EPUB 3 (2011) added audio, video, scripting and better support for non-Latin scripts. The IDPF merged into the W3C in 2017, which now maintains the standard. Amazon began accepting EPUB through its Send to Kindle service in 2022, converting files for Kindle devices. Fixed-layout EPUB suits comics and picture books.
