EML stands for Email message file, a file format abbreviation.
File containing a single email message saved in the standard Internet Message Format, including headers, body and attachments encoded with MIME. Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail and many web tools can open it.
Example: Save the phishing email as an EML and attach it to your report so the security team can see the full headers.
Usage notes
Because EML files preserve the complete headers, they are useful for investigating spam, phishing and email delivery problems and for legal evidence. The format is plain text and can be read in any text editor. Outlook's own single-message format is MSG, which stores the same information in a Microsoft-specific structure.
