DOCX stands for Office Open XML Word document, a file format abbreviation.
Default file format of Microsoft Word since Office 2007, storing text, formatting and images as XML files compressed inside a ZIP package. Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages and most word processors open and save it.
Example: Attach your résumé as a DOCX or PDF, not a link to an online document.
Usage notes
The Office Open XML format was standardized as ECMA-376 in 2006 and as ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008, after a contentious approval process. Renaming a .docx to .zip reveals its folders of XML and media files, a trick for extracting embedded images. Macro-enabled documents use the separate .docm extension, and templates use .dotx.
