DRM stands for Digital rights management, a software abbreviation.

Technologies that restrict copying, sharing or playback of digital content such as streaming video, e-books, music and games. Netflix streams, Kindle books and many Steam games are protected by DRM.

Example: The e-book has DRM, so it only opens in the Kindle app linked to my account.

Usage notes

Widely used systems include Google Widevine, Apple FairPlay and Microsoft PlayReady for video, and Denuvo for PC games. Apple removed DRM from songs sold on the iTunes Store in 2009. In the United States, the DMCA makes circumventing DRM illegal even for many personal uses, with exemptions reviewed every three years. Critics, including the Free Software Foundation, call it "digital restrictions management".
