DMCA stands for Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a US law abbreviation.

Copyright law of 1998 with two main parts: a safe harbor that shields online platforms from liability for users' infringement if they remove material after a takedown notice, and a ban on circumventing technical protection measures such as DRM.

Example: The video was removed after the studio sent a DMCA takedown notice.

Usage notes

It implemented two 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization treaties. Section 512 created the notice-and-takedown and counter-notice system used by platforms such as YouTube. Section 1201's anti-circumvention ban is subject to exemptions reviewed every three years by the Librarian of Congress, such as for unlocking phones and repairing devices.
