DADT stands for Don't ask, don't tell, a US law abbreviation.

Policy in effect from 1994 to 2011 that barred openly gay, lesbian and bisexual people from serving in the US military while prohibiting commanders from asking about service members' sexual orientation.

Example: More than 13,000 service members were discharged under DADT.

Usage notes

It was a compromise reached in 1993 after President Clinton sought to end the ban entirely, and Congress wrote the underlying ban into law. The Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010 led to the policy's end on September 20, 2011. Many discharged veterans later sought upgrades of their discharge papers.
