DOMA stands for Defense of Marriage Act, a US law abbreviation.

Law of 1996 that defined marriage for federal purposes as a union between one man and one woman and allowed states to refuse recognition of same-sex marriages from other states. It is no longer in force.

Example: After DOMA fell, same-sex spouses could file joint federal tax returns.

Usage notes

President Bill Clinton signed it in September 1996. The Supreme Court struck down its federal definition of marriage in United States v. Windsor (2013), and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) required all states to license same-sex marriages. The Respect for Marriage Act of 2022 formally repealed DOMA.
