CategoriesMedical

LTRA stands for Leukotriene receptor antagonist, a drug class abbreviation.

Oral anti-inflammatory drugs, montelukast (Singulair) and zafirlukast, that block leukotrienes involved in airway narrowing and allergy. They are used for asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and allergic rhinitis.

Example: Add LTRA montelukast 10 mg nightly; discussed mood and sleep side effects.

Usage notes

In 2020 the FDA added a boxed warning about serious neuropsychiatric events with montelukast, including agitation, nightmares and suicidal thoughts, and advised reserving it for allergic rhinitis only when other treatments fail. LTRAs are less effective than inhaled corticosteroids for asthma control.
