IACUC stands for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, an academic abbreviation.
Committee that reviews and oversees research and teaching involving vertebrate animals at a university or research institution, approving protocols and inspecting facilities. US law and Public Health Service policy require one at institutions using such animals with federal funding.
Example: Any change to the surgical procedure needs an IACUC amendment before we proceed.
Usage notes
Membership must include a veterinarian, a practicing scientist, a nonscientist and a person unaffiliated with the institution. IACUCs inspect facilities twice a year and review protocols for the "3Rs": replacement, reduction and refinement of animal use. Pronounced "EYE-uh-kuk".
