JIF stands for Journal Impact Factor, an academic abbreviation.
Metric published annually by Clarivate in its Journal Citation Reports, calculated as citations in a given year to a journal's items from the previous two years, divided by the number of citable items it published in those years. It is widely used, and criticized, as a shorthand for journal prestige.
Example: Our department no longer counts JIF when evaluating faculty publications.
Usage notes
The impact factor was devised by Eugene Garfield in the 1960s to help librarians choose journals. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), published in 2013, urges institutions not to use journal-level metrics to judge individual researchers. Citation patterns differ so much between fields that JIFs are not comparable across disciplines.
