LOR stands for Letter of recommendation, an academic abbreviation.

Letter from a teacher, counselor, professor or supervisor assessing an applicant's abilities and character, required by most selective colleges, graduate programs, medical schools and fellowships. Common App schools typically ask for one counselor letter and one or two teacher letters.

Example: Ask your professors for LORs at least a month before the application deadline.

Usage notes

Applicants usually waive their right to see letters under FERPA, which makes them more credible to readers. Graduate programs commonly require three letters, preferably from faculty who supervised research. Medical schools may accept a committee letter that combines several recommendations.
