1. Homeland Security Investigations

Investigative arm of ICE that pursues transnational crime, including human trafficking, child exploitation, drug and weapons smuggling, intellectual-property theft and illegal technology exports. Its special agents work in US field offices and attaché posts abroad.
Example: HSI agents seized thousands of counterfeit handbags at a warehouse near the port.
HSI adopted its current name in 2010; earlier it was ICE's Office of Investigations. Many of its cases have no immigration component, and some lawmakers have proposed making it an agency separate from ICE. In image processing, HSI refers to the hue, saturation and intensity color model.
2. Hispanic-Serving Institution

US college or university at which Hispanic students make up at least 25 percent of full-time-equivalent undergraduate enrollment, making it eligible for federal grants under Title V of the Higher Education Act. More than 600 institutions qualify, concentrated in California, Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Example: As an HSI, the university received a federal grant to expand bilingual tutoring.
Unlike HBCUs, HSIs are defined by current enrollment rather than founding mission, so the list changes yearly. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) advocates for them and tracks "emerging HSIs" approaching the threshold. Many community colleges are HSIs.
3. Horizontal situation indicator

Navigation instrument combining a heading indicator with a course deviation indicator, so the pilot sees heading and position relative to a selected VOR, localizer or GPS course on one display. On glass cockpits it appears as a rotating compass rose on the PFD.
Example: The HSI made intercepting the localizer far easier than the old separate heading indicator and needle.
Mechanical HSIs are gyro-stabilized and slaved to a remote magnetic flux sensor, removing the need to reset the heading indicator. The course deviation indicator (CDI) is the needle showing left or right of course. Setting the course arrow to the front course removes the reverse sensing of back-course approaches.
