HIPEC stands for Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, a surgical abbreviation.

Treatment given in the operating room after cytoreductive surgery has removed all visible tumor from the abdomen: heated chemotherapy solution is circulated through the abdominal cavity for roughly 30 to 90 minutes. It is used for peritoneal spread from appendiceal, colorectal, ovarian and gastric cancers and for peritoneal mesothelioma.

Example: CRS/HIPEC for pseudomyxoma peritonei: complete cytoreduction achieved.

Usage notes

Heating the solution to about 41 to 43 degrees Celsius enhances drug penetration and tumor kill. The combined operation is long and carries substantial morbidity, so patient selection is critical. The approach was popularized by American surgeon Paul Sugarbaker, and the extent of disease is scored with the peritoneal cancer index.
