Fem-pop stands for Femoral-popliteal (bypass), a surgical abbreviation.
Vascular operation that routes blood around a blocked superficial femoral artery by connecting the femoral artery in the groin to the popliteal artery near the knee, using the patient's own saphenous vein or a synthetic graft. It treats disabling claudication and limb-threatening ischemia.
Example: Right fem-pop bypass with reversed great saphenous vein to the below-knee popliteal.
Usage notes
Vein grafts generally last longer than synthetic grafts, especially below the knee, and patients have regular duplex ultrasound surveillance of the graft. The BEST-CLI trial (2022) found that bypass with a good saphenous vein outperformed endovascular treatment in suitable patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia.
