Hi-Fi stands for High fidelity, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
High-quality reproduction of sound that closely matches the original recording, and by extension a home stereo system built from separate components such as an amplifier, turntable, CD player and speakers.
Example: He spent his first paycheck on a vintage hi-fi with a turntable and big floor speakers.
Usage notes
The term has been used since the 1930s and became a marketing craze in the 1950s, when records and stereo sound improved. The Wi-Fi brand name was coined in 1999 as a play on hi-fi. Its opposite, lo-fi, now names a deliberately rough music style. Japan Audio Society's "Hi-Res Audio" logo marks equipment and files beyond CD quality.
