HDTV stands for High-definition television, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Television system with substantially higher resolution than standard definition, typically 1280 by 720 or 1920 by 1080 pixels with a 16:9 widescreen picture. It replaced analog standard-definition broadcasting in most countries during the 2000s and 2010s.
Example: The sports bar upgraded to HDTVs just in time for the 2006 World Cup.
Usage notes
Japan's broadcaster NHK pioneered analog high definition with its Hi-Vision system, broadcasting from 1989. US stations began digital HD broadcasts in 1998, and full-power analog transmissions ended on June 12, 2009. The term itself has faded as virtually every set sold now exceeds HD, and 4K models dominate store shelves.
