HBM stands for High Bandwidth Memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Memory built from stacked DRAM dies connected by thousands of vertical through-silicon vias and placed beside the processor on the same package, giving enormous bandwidth at lower power. AI accelerators such as Nvidia's data-center GPUs depend on it.

Example: Each accelerator carries 192 GB of HBM3E with about 8 TB/s of bandwidth.

Usage notes

AMD and SK hynix developed HBM, which JEDEC standardized in 2013; AMD's Radeon R9 Fury X (2015) was the first graphics card to use it. Generations include HBM2, HBM2E, HBM3, HBM3E and HBM4. Because it is costly and complex to package, HBM is rare in consumer products, and its supply became a bottleneck during the AI boom.
