GDDR stands for Graphics double data rate, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Family of high-bandwidth memory designed for graphics cards and game consoles, with generations including GDDR5, GDDR6, GDDR6X and GDDR7. It trades higher power use for much greater bandwidth than desktop DDR memory.

Example: The RTX 50 series moved to GDDR7, raising memory bandwidth by about a third.

Usage notes

GDDR generations are numbered independently of desktop DDR: GDDR6 (2018) is based on DDR4-era technology. Micron and Nvidia introduced GDDR6X in 2020 with four-level PAM4 signaling, and JEDEC published GDDR7, using three-level PAM3 signaling, in 2024. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X use GDDR6 as their unified main memory.
