1. Gas Turbine Systems Technician

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations

Operators and maintainers of the gas turbine engines, reduction gears and control systems that propel destroyers, cruisers and other gas-turbine ships. The rating divides into GSM (mechanical) and GSE (electrical) specialties.

Example: GSM2 Baker brought the second gas turbine online for the high-speed run.

Most US surface combatants use General Electric LM2500 gas turbines, a marine version of an aircraft engine. The rating was established as gas turbines replaced steam in new warships. In US civil service, GS refers to the General Schedule pay scale, a completely different meaning.

2. Glideslope

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

ILS component that broadcasts a UHF signal defining the vertical descent path to the runway, typically at a 3-degree angle. Pilots keep the glideslope needle centered so they arrive at the decision altitude aligned for landing.

Example: Captured the GS at the final approach fix and ran the before-landing checklist.

Also written G/S. Glideslope frequencies are paired with localizer frequencies, so tuning the localizer automatically selects the right glideslope. False glideslopes exist at multiples of the true angle, which is why procedures teach intercepting from below. The 2013 Asiana Flight 214 crash in San Francisco happened while the glideslope for runway 28L was out of service for construction.

3. Ground speed

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Actual speed of an aircraft over the ground, equal to true airspeed corrected for wind. A headwind reduces ground speed and lengthens flight time, while a tailwind increases it; GPS navigators and seatback maps display it directly.

Example: With the jet stream behind us, our GS hit 680 knots over Pennsylvania.

Ground speed determines time en route and fuel burn, while airspeed determines lift, which is why stall speeds and approach speeds are expressed as airspeeds. Eastbound transatlantic flights riding exceptional winter jet streams have recorded ground speeds above 800 mph without exceeding normal cruise airspeed. Context distinguishes it from GS, the glideslope.

4. South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Remote British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with no permanent residents, only research and government staff at King Edward Point. The explorer Ernest Shackleton is buried at Grytviken on South Georgia.

Example: The .gs domain is marketed for gaming and short links, far from South Georgia's penguins.

South Georgia was a major whaling center until the 1960s. Argentina claims the islands. The alpha-3 code is SGS.
