GRUB stands for GRand Unified Bootloader, a software abbreviation.
Boot loader used by most Linux distributions to start the operating system, showing a menu to choose between kernels or between Linux and Windows on dual-boot PCs.
Example: After installing Windows, the GRUB menu disappeared, so I repaired it from a live USB.
Usage notes
GRUB began as part of the GNU Project in 1995; GRUB 2, a complete rewrite, replaced "GRUB Legacy" in major distributions around 2009 to 2012. Its configuration file, grub.cfg, is normally generated by tools such as update-grub rather than edited by hand. Some distributions now use systemd-boot instead.
