GMS stands for Google Mobile Services, a software abbreviation.
Bundle of Google apps and APIs, including the Play Store, Gmail, Maps, YouTube and Google Play services, that phone makers license separately from open-source Android. Most Android phones sold outside China include it.
Example: Without GMS, banking apps that rely on Google's push notifications may not work on the phone.
Usage notes
Licensing GMS requires passing Google's compatibility tests and agreeing to preinstall certain apps. After US trade restrictions in 2019, Huawei lost access and built its own Huawei Mobile Services and AppGallery. The European Commission fined Google 4.34 billion euros in 2018 over GMS licensing terms that tied Chrome and Search to the Play Store.
