GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, a software abbreviation.
Free, open-source raster graphics editor for photo retouching, image composition and digital painting, available for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is the best-known free alternative to Adobe Photoshop.
Example: I resized and color-corrected the photos in GIMP since I don't have Photoshop.
Usage notes
Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis started GIMP as a university project in 1995; its interface toolkit, GTK, began as the "GIMP Toolkit" and later became the foundation of the GNOME desktop. GIMP 3.0, released in March 2025 after years of development, added non-destructive filters and better color management. Its name has drawn criticism, but the developers have kept it.
