GNOME stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment, a software abbreviation.
Free desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like systems, the default on Ubuntu, Fedora Workstation and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It favors a minimal, distraction-free design built around an "Activities" overview.
Example: Ubuntu's desktop is a customized version of GNOME with a dock on the left.
Usage notes
Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena started GNOME in 1997 as a fully free alternative to KDE, whose Qt toolkit was not yet under a free license. The project has since dropped the expansion and treats GNOME as a name, pronounced "guh-NOME" or "NOME". The radical redesign of GNOME 3 in 2011 led to forks such as MATE and Cinnamon.
