GLP-1 RA stands for Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, a drug class abbreviation.
Drugs such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus), liraglutide and dulaglutide that mimic a gut hormone to boost insulin release, slow stomach emptying and reduce appetite. They treat type 2 diabetes and obesity and lower cardiovascular risk.
Example: Titrate GLP-1 RA: semaglutide 0.25 mg weekly x 4 weeks, then 0.5 mg.
Usage notes
Exenatide, the first (2005), was derived from a protein in Gila monster saliva. Semaglutide 2.4 mg produced about 15 percent average weight loss in the STEP-1 trial, and demand caused nationwide shortages from 2022. A boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents rules them out for people with a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2.
