1. Gastrointestinal bleeding

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Any bleeding into the digestive tract, traditionally divided into upper and lower GI bleeding by its source relative to the ligament of Treitz. Presentation ranges from occult blood loss with iron deficiency to vomiting blood, black stools or bright red rectal bleeding with shock; management centers on resuscitation, transfusion and endoscopy.

Example: Admitted for GIB on apixaban, two units of packed red cells given, EGD planned within 24 hours.

Often charted simply as "GI bleed". The Glasgow-Blatchford score predicts the need for intervention, and the Rockall score estimates mortality in upper bleeding. Black tarry stool (melena) usually signals an upper source, while bright red blood suggests a lower one unless bleeding is brisk. A restrictive transfusion threshold around hemoglobin 7 g/dL is standard in stable patients.

2. Gibibyte (GiB)

Units & Measurements · Data Unit Abbreviations

Exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30), the IEC binary unit about 7.4 percent larger than a decimal gigabyte. Cloud providers specify virtual machine memory in GiB, and many storage tools report in it.

Example: The instance type provides 16 GiB of memory and 4 vCPUs.

Pronounced "GIB-ee-byte". Amazon Web Services documentation, for example, lists EC2 memory and EBS volume sizes in GiB. Because of the 7.4 percent gap, a drive sold as 500 GB holds about 465.7 GiB.
