GEJ stands for Gastroesophageal junction, a gastroenterology abbreviation.

Anatomic point where the esophagus meets the stomach, marked endoscopically by the top of the gastric folds. Endoscopists measure hiatal hernias and Barrett's segments in relation to it, and cancers here are classified by their position relative to the junction.

Example: Irregular Z-line 2 cm above the GEJ; biopsies to evaluate for Barrett's.

Usage notes

The squamocolumnar junction, or Z-line, normally sits at the GEJ; displacement upward suggests Barrett's esophagus. GEJ adenocarcinomas are grouped by the Siewert classification into types I to III. Also written EGJ (esophagogastric junction) in manometry literature.
