Gbps stands for Gigabits per second, a data unit abbreviation.
One billion bits per second, the tier of fiber-to-the-home plans, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6 and 7 links, and USB and Thunderbolt ports. Multi-gigabit home plans now reach 2, 5 or even 8 Gbps.
Example: The fiber plan delivers symmetrical 1 Gbps upload and download speeds.
Usage notes
Port speeds use the same unit: USB 3.2 Gen 2 runs at 10 Gbps, Thunderbolt 4 at 40 Gbps and Thunderbolt 5 at 80 Gbps, or up to 120 Gbps in its boost mode. A 1 Gbps connection tops out around 940 Mbps of real-world throughput because of protocol overhead.
