Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Indication on invoices, quotes and shipping documents that goods or services are supplied at no cost, such as samples, replacements or promotional items.

Example: The replacement unit ships FOC under warranty.

Customs declarations still require a value for FOC goods, so shipping documents state a nominal or commercial value marked "no charge."

2. Friend of the Court

Law & Legal · Estate and Family Law Abbreviations

Michigan circuit court office that investigates and makes recommendations on custody, parenting time and child support in domestic relations cases and enforces support and parenting-time orders. Each county, or group of counties, has an FOC office.

Example: The FOC recommended a support increase after reviewing both parents' new income.

Created in 1919. Parties can object to an FOC recommendation and ask for a hearing before a judge. The office works with the state disbursement unit to collect and pay out support. It is unrelated to "amicus curiae", the Latin phrase that also translates as friend of the court.
