CategoriesBusiness & Finance

GMV stands for Gross merchandise value, an e-commerce & retail abbreviation.

Total value of goods sold through a marketplace or e-commerce platform over a period, before deducting fees, discounts, returns, cancellations and shipping costs. Marketplaces such as Alibaba, eBay and Etsy report it as a headline measure of scale.

Example: The marketplace processed $4.2 billion in GMV, but its revenue was only the fees it kept.

Usage notes

Also called gross merchandise volume. GMV is not revenue: a marketplace typically earns a "take rate" of a few percent to around 15% of it. Analysts treat GMV cautiously because definitions vary and it can be inflated by refunded or canceled orders.
