DVRO stands for Domestic violence restraining order, an estate and family law abbreviation.

Civil court order, especially under California's Domestic Violence Prevention Act, protecting a person from abuse, threats or harassment by a spouse, partner, relative or dating partner. It can order the restrained person to stay away, move out and surrender firearms.

Example: The judge granted a temporary DVRO and set a hearing within 21 days.

Usage notes

A temporary order can be issued the same day without notice, followed by a hearing on a longer order lasting up to five years and renewable. Federal law also bars gun possession under qualifying orders, a restriction upheld in United States v. Rahimi (2024). Violating the order is a crime.
