FEES stands for Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
Swallow assessment in which a thin flexible scope is passed through the nose to view the throat while the patient eats and drinks foods dyed for visibility. It can be done at the bedside without radiation.
Example: FEES in ICU: pooling of secretions, penetration with thin liquids.
Usage notes
Introduced by Susan Langmore and colleagues in 1988. It is useful for patients who cannot travel to radiology, such as those in intensive care. FEES views the throat directly but briefly loses sight of it during the swallow itself.
