F2P stands for Free-to-play, a video game abbreviation also used in texting.
Business model in which a game can be downloaded and played without paying, with revenue coming from optional purchases such as cosmetics, passes or currency. Fortnite, League of Legends and Genshin Impact are F2P.
Example: The game is F2P, but the battle pass costs $10 a season.
Usage notes
F2P became dominant on mobile and PC in the 2010s. Critics argue some designs push players toward spending through timers or randomized rewards. A small share of players, often called "whales", provide much of the revenue.
