GOTY stands for Game of the Year, a gaming slang abbreviation also used in entertainment.
Award given to the best game released in a year by critics, publications and award shows, and an informal label of praise, as in "this is my GOTY." Publishers also sell "GOTY Editions" bundling the game with its DLC.
Example: Calling it now, this indie roguelike is my GOTY.
Usage notes
The Game Awards, hosted by Geoff Keighley since 2014, present the most watched GOTY award, alongside long-running honors from outlets and developer ceremonies. Fans argue about winners every December. "GOTY Edition" re-releases became common in the 2000s as a way to sell complete versions.
