EEC stands for European Economic Community, an international organization abbreviation.
Organization created by the 1957 Treaty of Rome among Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany to form a common market and customs union. It was the forerunner of the European Union.
Example: Britain joined the EEC in 1973 along with Denmark and Ireland.
Usage notes
Commonly called the Common Market, it began operating in 1958. The Maastricht Treaty renamed it the European Community in 1993, and the Lisbon Treaty folded it into the EU in 2009. The UK's 1975 referendum on staying in the EEC produced a two-to-one vote to remain.
