1. Employee assistance program
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Confidential, employer-paid service offering short-term counseling, referrals and support for personal problems such as stress, mental health, substance use, grief, financial or legal issues. Employees and often household members can use a limited number of free sessions.
Example: The EAP gives you six free counseling sessions a year, and HR never sees who uses it.
EAPs grew out of workplace alcoholism programs started by companies in the 1940s. Most are run by outside vendors to preserve confidentiality. Use rates are often low, partly because employees are unaware of the benefit or doubt its privacy.
2. Extensible Authentication Protocol
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
A framework that carries many different authentication methods, such as certificates, passwords or SIM credentials, between a client, a network device and an authentication server. Enterprise Wi-Fi and wired 802.1X networks rely on it.
Example: Choose PEAP as the EAP method and accept the company's server certificate when joining the Wi-Fi.
Defined in RFC 3748 (2004). Common methods include EAP-TLS, which uses client certificates and is considered the strongest, and PEAP, which protects a password exchange inside a TLS tunnel. Devices that skip server certificate validation can be tricked into sending credentials to a fake access point.
