FIDO stands for Fast Identity Online, a cybersecurity abbreviation.

A set of open authentication standards from the FIDO Alliance that replace passwords with public-key cryptography, using security keys, phone biometrics or built-in authenticators. Passkeys are based on FIDO standards.

Example: The bank now supports FIDO security keys and passkeys for business accounts.

Usage notes

The FIDO Alliance was founded in 2012 and launched publicly in 2013; members include Google, Apple, Microsoft and major banks. FIDO2 combines the W3C WebAuthn API with the CTAP protocol for external authenticators. Because each credential is bound to the genuine website's domain, FIDO logins resist phishing. Pronounced "FIE-doh".
