DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Video connector introduced in 1999 to carry digital signals from computers to flat-panel monitors, with large white plugs and thumbscrews. Variants are DVI-D (digital), DVI-A (analog) and DVI-I (both).
Example: My old monitor only has DVI, so I'm using a passive DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter.
Usage notes
The Digital Display Working Group created DVI to replace analog VGA. Single-link DVI handles up to 1920 by 1200 at 60 Hz, while dual-link supports 2560 by 1600 and higher refresh rates. DVI-D video signals are electrically compatible with HDMI, so simple adapters work, but DVI carries no audio. Graphics cards dropped DVI ports in the late 2010s.
