DVD-R stands for Digital Versatile Disc Recordable, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Write-once recordable DVD format holding 4.7 GB, developed by Pioneer and backed by the DVD Forum. It is compatible with most DVD players and drives and was widely used for home videos and backups.
Example: We burned the school concert to a DVD-R so families could play it on their TVs.
Usage notes
A rival write-once format, DVD+R, was backed by Philips, Sony and HP from 2002, starting a format war that drive makers resolved with "DVD±R" burners that handle both. Rewritable versions are DVD-RW and DVD+RW, and dual-layer discs hold 8.5 GB. The minus and plus signs are part of the format names, not symbols for better or worse.
