Usage notes

The first DSM appeared in 1952. DSM-5 switched from Roman to Arabic numerals to allow incremental updates, abolished the five-axis system and introduced changes such as autism spectrum disorder. DSM-5-TR added prolonged grief disorder. Billing in the US uses ICD-10-CM codes, which the DSM cross-references. Internationally, the WHO's ICD-11 is the main alternative.
