DMDD stands for Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Childhood disorder introduced in DSM-5 in 2013, defined by severe temper outbursts at least three times a week plus persistently irritable or angry mood between outbursts for at least a year. Diagnosis is made between ages 6 and 18 with onset before 10.
Example: DMDD: explosive outbursts 4–5 times weekly, irritable most days for 18 months; start CBT and parent training.
Usage notes
DMDD was created partly in response to a sharp rise in bipolar disorder diagnoses among children who had chronic irritability rather than distinct manic episodes. Children with DMDD are more likely to develop depression and anxiety than bipolar disorder in adulthood. It cannot be diagnosed together with ODD.
