CategoriesMedical

CRT-D stands for Cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator, a cardiology abbreviation.

Combined device that provides biventricular pacing for heart failure plus the shock function of an implantable defibrillator. It is the usual choice when a patient qualifies for both CRT and an ICD.

Example: Ischemic cardiomyopathy, EF 22%, LBBB 160 ms: CRT-D implanted.

Usage notes

A CRT-P (pacemaker only) provides resynchronization without the defibrillator and may be chosen for older or frail patients or those whose main goal is symptom relief. CRT-D devices are larger and have shorter battery life than standard ICDs. The choice between them is a shared decision guided by prognosis and the patient's goals.
