1. Central venous pressure
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Pressure in the superior vena cava near the right atrium, measured through a central venous catheter and reflecting right-sided filling pressure. Normal values are about 2 to 8 mmHg.
Example: CVP 18 with rising creatinine; hold fluids and consider venous congestion as the cause.
CVP was long used to guide fluid resuscitation, but studies show it predicts fluid responsiveness poorly, so dynamic measures such as pulse pressure variation and passive leg raising are preferred. A high CVP can impair kidney and liver function through venous congestion. Bedside proxies include jugular venous pressure and the size and collapsibility of the IVC.
2. Cost-volume-profit analysis
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations
Management accounting technique that examines how changes in sales volume, selling price, variable costs and fixed costs affect profit. It helps managers find break-even points, set prices and plan production.
Example: CVP analysis showed that a $2 price cut would need about 30 percent more unit sales to keep profit flat.
CVP relies on simplifying assumptions, such as constant selling prices, linear costs and a stable sales mix. Its key outputs are contribution margin, break-even point and margin of safety. It is a core topic in management accounting exams such as those for the CMA and CIMA qualifications.
