CVD stands for Cardiovascular disease, a cardiology abbreviation.
Broad category covering diseases of the heart and blood vessels, including coronary disease, stroke, heart failure, hypertensive disease and peripheral artery disease. The WHO estimated that cardiovascular diseases caused about 17.9 million deaths worldwide in 2019, more than any other group of conditions.
Example: Women with a history of preeclampsia face higher lifetime CVD risk and need regular blood pressure checks.
Usage notes
The term appears mostly in public health, epidemiology and prevention guidance; individual diagnoses name a specific condition instead. Some writers use CVD for cerebrovascular disease, which creates ambiguity, so neurology notes usually write "cerebrovascular disease" in full. Risk calculators such as QRISK in the UK and PREVENT in the US estimate an individual's CVD risk.
