XZ stands for XZ compressed file, a file format abbreviation.
File compressed with XZ Utils, which uses the LZMA2 algorithm to achieve higher compression than gzip at the cost of speed. Linux kernel sources and many software packages are distributed as .tar.xz files.
Example: Extract the kernel source from the XZ archive with tar -xJf.
Usage notes
XZ Utils was released in 2009 as a successor to LZMA Utils. In March 2024, Microsoft engineer Andres Freund discovered a deliberately planted backdoor in XZ Utils versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1 (CVE-2024-3094) after noticing SSH logins were taking about half a second longer than usual. The incident became a landmark case of open-source supply-chain sabotage.
