XRP stands for XRP, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
The native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain designed for fast, low-cost payments and currency exchange and closely associated with the San Francisco company Ripple. Validators reach agreement in seconds rather than through mining.
Example: Remittances settled in XRP arrive in seconds instead of the two days a wire takes.
Usage notes
The ledger launched in 2012 with 100 billion XRP created at the outset, and many people call the token "Ripple" after the company. In December 2020 the US SEC sued Ripple over XRP sales; in 2023 a federal judge ruled that XRP sales on public exchanges were not securities offerings, while some institutional sales were. XRP has no official expansion.
